Overview

This article explains how to offset your temperatures when Cropster’s readings differ from those on your roasting machine—a discrepancy known as Temperature Deviation.

About the temperature deviation in general

  • A slight deviation (up to 2°C/4ºF) can be normal depending on your setup.
  • If the deviation is static (stays the same throughout the roast), an offset can be added within the Roasting Intelligence Preferences.

Instructions

Static vs. dynamic deviation

This section breaks down the two types of temperature discrepancies:

  1. Static (Constant)
  2. Dynamic (Changing)

Static deviation

If the deviation is static—meaning the temperature difference remains constant throughout the roast—you can correct it by adding a fixed offset:

  1. Log in to Roasting Intelligence.
  2. Navigate toPreferences > Machine tab > Measurements.
  3. Select the measurement dropdown to apply the temperature adjustment. Enter the temperature difference into the Offset field for the specific measurement you wish to adjust.
  4. Click Save.

Dynamic deviation

For dynamic deviations—where the temperature difference changes throughout the roast—we recommend focusing exclusively on a single readout (ideally the Cropster display).

A slight deviation (up to 2°C/4ºF) can be normal depending on your setup.
If the temperature deviation is significant, don't hesitate to contact our Customer Support team.

Cropster Connector

If your roaster is connected via a Cropster Connector (Phidget), the setup process depends on how the probes are physically wired to the device:

  1. Splicing connection
  2. Dual probes
  3. Independent probe next to an existing probe

Splicing connection

Splicing errors are common during setup. To fix them, redo the connection and ensure the wires are twisted together very tightly. Loose wires are the most likely cause of temperature errors.

Dual probes

A dual probe contains two separate sensors:

  1. One sensor sends data to your roasting machine.
  2. The on sensor sends data to Cropster.

Because these sensors measure temperature independently, they rarely match perfectly. A small deviation of 2°C (4°F) is normal.

Independent probe next to an existing probe

Installing an additional probe next to an existing one will almost certainly result in different temperature readings.
Because these two sensors operate independently, several factors can cause them to deviate:

  • Placement
  • Thickness
  • Batch Size
  • Probe Age

Countermeasures

This section provides a final checklist to verify the physical and technical integrity of your setup, ensuring you aren't masking a simple connection error with a software adjustment. It is essential to ensure your hardware and settings are correctly configured.

Probe type

Is the probe type correctly assigned within Roasting Intelligence?

  1. Navigate to Preferences > Machine tab > Configuration.
  2. Verify the Probe Type in the Connector Setup section.

To identify your Thermocouple type, examine the colored coating on the ends of the wires. The color coding indicates the specific Thermocouple type.

The physical connection

Ensure all wires are properly seated. Thermocouples use positive and negative leads; verify that each wire is connected to its corresponding (+) or (-) port on the Cropster connector.
