How to verify the WiFi network frequency
Table of Contents
Overview
This article explains how to verify the WiFi network frequency on macOS and Windows, as well as on iOS and Android.
The BrewBeacon is only compatible with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks.
Instructions
Verifying the WiFi network frequency on your laptop
Using macOS
- Connect to your WiFi network.
- Hold down the ⌥ Option key and click on the WiFi icon. A new window will pop up.
-
Navigate to the Channel information. The text will say 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz.

Using Windows
- Connect to your WiFi network.
- Press the Windows Key + I simultaneously.
- Click Network & Internet.
- Select "Wi-Fi" from the left menu (if applicable), then click on the link that says "Hardware properties" or "Properties" for your active Wi-Fi connection.
-
Scroll down the list of properties until you find the field labeled "Network band" or “Radio type”:
- If you see 802.11n, 802.11g, or 802.11b, you are likely connected to 2.4 GHz.
- If you see 802.11ac or 802.11a, you are likely connected to 5 GHz.
-
Some Windows versions will explicitly state "2.4 GHz" or "5 GHz."
To adjust your router and split the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, please contact your network provider.
Verifying the WiFi network frequency on your phone
Using iOs
According to Apple's instructions, you are required to install a 'Wi-Fi analyzer' app from the App Store.
Using Android
You can check the Wi-Fi frequency (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) your Android device is connected to using the built-in system settings, though the exact labels may vary slightly between different Android versions and manufacturers (like Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.).
Since Android does not display the frequency in a standard Wi-Fi details screen, the most common method is to use a third-party app.
Method 1: Using a Wi-Fi Analyzer App (Recommended)
This is the most reliable way on Android to see detailed network information, including the operating frequency.
- Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
- Search for a free app like “Wi-Fi Analyzer”.
- Install the app.
- Check the Frequency: The app will typically show a list of all nearby networks. Look for your connected network (SSID). The displayed details will clearly state whether it is operating on the 2.4 GHz band or the 5 GHz band.
Method 2: Checking Advanced Network Details (Varies by device)
Some newer Android versions provide this detail in the advanced Wi-Fi properties:
- Open Settings on your Android phone.
- Navigate to Network & Internet or Connections (on Samsung devices).
- Tap on Wi-Fi.
- Tap on the network you are currently connected to.
- Look for an Advanced or Details section (you might need to tap a gear icon next to the network name).
- Look for a field labeled Frequency, Band, or Link speed. If it states the frequency (e.g., 5180 MHz), divide the number by 1000 to see the GHz band (e.g., 5.1 GHz = 5 GHz band).
